Mindi Scott is a YA 2010 debut author. FREEFALL, her first novel, will be published by Simon Pulse (Simon & Schuster) on October 5, 2010, which means: exactly 2 months from today! And that's happily that I have her here guest posting.A few years ago, I watched an episode of LOST in which one of the characters (Charlie) makes a list of the five best days he's ever had. At the time, I was inspired to reflect on my own life and make a similar list.
One of the things I ended up writing down was: "That day in Mexico when I read a book at the beach while Dwayne went surfing."
I shared my list, and a few who read it were curious about what possibly have been so special about that day. It doesn't sound particularly exciting, right? So, of all the vacations I've ever taken, why does that stand out? Of all the things I did in Mexico during that week, why would that particular beach excursion be one of the five best days of my ENTIRE LIFE?
The truth is, I don't remember which book I was reading or even if I particularly liked it. All I can say is that while my husband's friends taught him to surf at this beautiful vacant beach, I was lying on a towel on the sand. I watched them off and on throughout the day and ran into the waves whenever I needed to cool off. But for the most part, if was just me in paradise, reading a book.
And I was completely at peace -- doing exactly what made me the happiest.
If I were to pull out the list I made back then, I suspect that some of the things on it might change. After all, that was before I had a book deal or even an agent. But I have a feeling that the day on the beach in Mexico has a permanent place on my list!
Some of my book recommendations for this summer:
HARMONIC FEEDBACK by Tara Kelly (for those who enjoy contemporary YA with amazingingly real characters)
OTHER by Karen Kincy (for readers who love a compelling paranormal mystery)
THE DEATHDAY LETTER by Shaun David Hutchinson (for readers who can't get enough of great humor and voice infused with awesomeness!)
